The next generation of engines has been announced by BMW engines division and they have announced that there will be four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines. They also said that the new engines will not be introduced in the new 5 Series but in the future, the decisions might be different.
The BMW commitment
The BMW engine division is committed to modernise the internal combustion engines but this time they will use an entirely new and modern modular engine family. There will not be only three cylinder engines but the new three-cylinder engines are said to be the best in class with extreme efficiency and more power than any BMW engine offered across the range to date.
The speculations about the Arrival
The speculations that BMW will introduce these new engines in the 5 series, the head of engine and powertrain division, Dominic Spanring stated that the new engine family will make their debut in the 5 series. He further said that they are not elongating the wait that the new series of engines will arrive soon. The all-new 5 series is making its debut in coming winter and sales will start from next year.
The power generation squad, the BMW Engines
The tiniest engines on the class, BMW 3-cylinder diesel engines will produce 95bhp of power and 220Nm of torque. The next power variant will have the same configuration of three cylinders but 114bhp of power and 270Nm of pulling power of torque.
BMW four-cylinder engines are the next big thing in the squad and they will be offered in three power variants from 147bhp, 188 and 231bhp with the pulling powers of 300, 400 and 450Nm respectively. However, the power output from the petrol engines has not been disclosed yet but hopefully these engines will also perform much better in the future.
It is expected that the new engine family will eventually be used on the 1 series and the BMW 5 series with the time. It is also expected that the new engine family will also make their presence in several models of MINI such as the Countryman which will arrive a bit early.
It has also been announced last week that the new engines will get the twin-twirl turbocharging technology across the range and will predominantly be serving the high performance diesel engines across the range. The main feature of the new technology is to reduce the air pressure at the lower engine revolutions to keep the boost at par. The second class of the turbochargers will offer high performance and best optimised air pressure at the higher engine revolutions. Across the new engine line-up, the fuel injection systems are also updated to ensure high pressure fuel injection with a maximum of 2,700 bar. The all new balancer shaft has been introduced on the three cylinder engines to improve the noise quality and vibration issues. It offers optimised NVH levels across the line up. New engine family will offer extreme performance across the range.
