Introduction and history of BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 series has been a compact executive class leader for more than 40 years. The BMW 3 series is a family of vehicles that has spanned a huge range of models since its introduction in 1970 and includes today’s mega-seller brand such as 320i.

In early seventies BMW 3 series was of a small saloon but over the years the series has grown in size to compete other tough competitors of this ranges such as Mercedes C class, Jaguar XE and Audi A4.

Vast range of engines

BMW3 series have vast range of engines produced with different potential in both petrol and diesel range. In petrol engines new range starts in 2005 and is being used till today with little modifications. The 320i produced in 2005 was of 148bhp with 148lb/ft torque reaching 0-62 m/h in 9 seconds. After a little bit improvement in this engine BMW introduced a new petrol engine in 2007 with 154 bhp, 168 bhp and 170 bhp along with torque amount 155lb/ft reaching 0-62 m/h in 82 seconds and 8.1 seconds respectively.

Diesel engine range of BMW 3 Series

In the range of diesel engines BMW has produced a vast variety of engines with great performance and reliability. In BMW 3 series 320i diesel engine was first produced in 2005 -2009 with 161bhp and a torque of 251 lb/ft reaching 0 to 62 m/h in just 8.3 seconds and this is remarkable achievement in this range of engines.

A wide range of three, four and six cylinder engines are available with different power generating ratio offering a great blend of performance versus running costs. The whole range of 3 series with 320i or 320d is pretty good, even the turbo charged 2.0 litre manages to keep CO2 emission at a reasonable 151g/m.

Drive

From 2013 to up till now BMW has been producing 320ED (efficient Dynamics) in 320range engines, though this engine is less powerful than its predecessors but it is popular among car lovers. BMW 3 series gets a range of fast, but frugal engines and is one of the best compact executive saloons to drive.

Final word

BMW has made a good reputation for making fun to drive car and the 3 series is no exception because of its vast range in engines. The king retains its crown.
